The Lucky Ones began with Dan Bern, a grand piano, and a church. That simple setting forms the heart of the album, giving the songs room to breathe and placing Bern’s voice, words, and piano at the center.
From there, producer Jim Reilley built out the arrangements in Nashville, adding a band around those original performances.
Throughout The Lucky Ones, the piano remains the thread that ties it all together. The band expands the possibilities of that starting point, bringing another dimension to an album that began with one musician at the keys.
